Crown Valley Traffic Relief Project : Transportation Transformation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Crown Valley Parkway Traffic Relief Project?

The Crown Valley Traffic Relief Project will widen Crown Valley Parkway east of Puerta Real so that it is eight lanes from Interstate 5 to the eastern city limits, just past Jardines. In addition to adding a traffic lane on both sides, several turn lanes will be added and the roadway will be beautified with landscape improvements including trees, flowers and shrubs along with pilasters and other aesthetic improvements.

How long will it take to complete the project?

The project began in early 2006 and will be completed in mid 2008.

What will be done to minimize traffic congestion during construction?

Construction will be done in phases to minimize traffic impacts. Additionally, much of the work will take place at night when traffic is light. During construction of the parkway area on the outer part of the roadway, the travel lanes will be shifted toward the center median. Using this approach, the six existing lanes on Crown Valley Parkway can be maintained throughout most of the construction, although some operations will require temporary lane closures.

Will businesses including Mission Hospital, the Shops at Mission Viejo and Kaleidoscope by affected by the construction?

While construction will occur in front of these businesses and medical facilities, and temporary entryway detours may be required, access will always be available.

What landscape and hardscape improvements will there be?

In addition to increasing traffic capacity by 33%, the Crown Valley Parkway improvements will give the roadway a new landscape theme with large pilasters with a stone base and a Crown Valley Parkway logo. Additionally, trees, flowers and shrubs will be placed in the median as well as the parkways.

How much will this project cost and how will it be funded?

The total project cost will be approximately $17.5 million. Ladera Ranch development fees are paying for approximately 75% of the project. The rest is coming from local development fees, federal funds and Measure M.
